Brighter Skin, Backed by Science
Clearer skin is less about changing your features and more about removing the distractions that keep them from shining. If you’re bothered by sun damage, facial redness or even acne, BroadBand Light (BBL) therapy at May Plastic Surgery can revitalize your skin’s appearance and restore a brighter, more even complexion with minimal downtime.

What Is BroadBand Light?
Also known as phototherapy, BBL is a light-based treatment developed by Sciton, the makers of the HALO® laser and MOXI®. Although BBL and lasers both use light energy to rejuvenate the skin, BBL is not a laser, using a broader spectrum of light rather than one highly focused beam. If a laser is like a single note on a piano, then BBL can be better described as a chord.
At its core, BBL is an advanced form of intense pulsed light (IPL). Like IPL, it delivers short bursts of filtered light at different wavelengths to treat specific skin concerns. But unlike IPL, which is less powerful and less precise, BBL has tunable settings and dual-lamp technology, allowing for more efficient treatments that are highly customizable to specific needs.
Pulse for pulse, BBL delivers up to three times as much energy as IPL, but built-in cooling keeps you comfortable and reduces risks associated with older technologies, so the difference is most apparent in your results, not your treatment experience.

How Does BBL Work?
BBL emits pulses of light energy that are absorbed by the pigment in brown spots and by the hemoglobin in visible blood vessels, breaking both down to restore your skin’s clarity. It also reaches beneath the skin to gently warm the tissue, encouraging new collagen activity.
With enough treatments, a landmark pilot study by Stanford University researchers found that BBL can reprogram your skin cells, altering gene expression to cause older, damaged cells to look and behave as though they were younger.
What Can BBL Address?
At May Plastic Surgery, we often recommend BBL for patients who want to address:
- Sun damage and brown spots
- Visible blood vessels
- Facial redness
- Uneven skin tone
- Visible changes from aging on the face, neck, chest or hands
- Mild rosacea
- Discoloration left behind by acne
Most patients begin to see improvements within a week or two of their first session, and results continue to get better after a short series of treatments. Because BBL supports your skin's own renewal process, ongoing sessions help maintain that clearer, brighter look year after year.
The Art & Science of Aesthetic Treatments at May Plastic Surgery
At May Plastic Surgery, we believe the best treatment plan isn't necessarily the most complex one. It's the right one for you. That’s why every recommendation begins with understanding your goals and creating a plan that fits your anatomy, lifestyle, and long-term vision.
Our philosophy is rooted in comprehensive aesthetic care. Rather than viewing surgical and nonsurgical treatments as separate paths, we see them as complementary tools that work together to achieve natural, lasting results. Sometimes surgery is the best option. Sometimes filler, Sculptra or a series of laser treatments is all that's needed. More often, the best results come from thoughtfully combining multiple approaches over time.

Procedure Details
Two weeks before your appointment, our team will ask you to stay out of the sun and skip tanning beds altogether. Sun-darkened skin absorbs light differently, and that affects your comfort and results.
On the day of treatment, our team will apply a layer of gel to clean skin, which does double duty: it helps the BBL handpiece glide smoothly, and it ensures the light energy gets absorbed evenly. As the device moves across the skin, it delivers a short burst of light that converts to heat the moment it’s absorbed, which you’ll feel as a quick, warm snap. While noticeable, each pulse lasts just a split second, so the sensation fades almost immediately. Most patients find it easily tolerable.
You’ll use protective eyewear during this portion of treatment, which takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area. Afterward, you’re free to return home and resume most normal activities, with aftercare instructions and guidelines on sun exposure for optimal healing.

Recovery & Results
BBL phototherapy is known for its short, easy recovery. The treated area sometimes feels a little warm and may look pink or swollen right after the session. This will settle after a few hours.
As the skin heals, you may also notice small, grainy spots that look like coffee grounds. These “coffee grounds” are known medically as MENDS (microscopic epidermal necrotic debris) and are the result of damaged pigment being pushed out from beneath the skin’s surface. A sign of successful treatment. The spots will flake away naturally as the skin renews itself.
Visible improvement usually appears within one or two weeks. Your skin may do best with three to five sessions spaced about a month apart, and you can return for periodic maintenance treatments. Over time, your skin will look smoother and more even in tone, with a healthy glow.
