Renew Skin From Within
It's natural to lose some collagen and volume in the face as you get older, but there are ways that you can support your body to help your skin continue looking fresh and resilient. At May Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brian May has a solution for patients who want to restore a little volume in their cheeks or nasolabial folds, but don't want traditional fillers. He uses a product called Sculptra that stimulates your body from within to help it look refreshed and youthful.

What Are Biostimulators?
Biostimulators are injectable products that prompt a beneficial healing process in the skin and stimulate collagen production. Dr. May's favorite biostimulatory product to use in his practice is Sculptra®. This injectable uses poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to give the skin a scaffolding around which to build extra collagen. Sculptra provides natural-looking results that are also long-lasting, and it has a good track record for consistent results.

What Can Biostimulators Address?
Collagen production naturally slows down throughout adulthood, starting as early as your 20s and decreasing by 1% every year. Collagen is the protein that gives your skin its firm structure and support. When production slows, you may start to notice less volume in your face or a deepening of lines.
Biostimulators can address:
- Mid-face volume loss
- Hollow or sunken cheeks
- Deep nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
Along with these benefits, Sculptra can provide an overall glow as it rejuvenates and refreshes the skin. Dr. May will take a look at your facial structure and talk to you about the cosmetic concerns you're interested in treating to see if biostimulators would be a good fit.
The Art & Science of Aesthetic Treatments With Dr. May
Dr. May trained as a surgeon, and surgery will always be at the core of what he does. But his engineering background taught him something that applies just as much in the treatment room as it does in the OR: the best solution isn't always the most complex one. It's the right one. When a patient's goals can be met with a well-chosen nonsurgical treatment, that's not a lesser path. It's good judgment, and it's exactly the kind of guidance patients at May Plastic Surgery have come to expect.
For Dr. May, med spa treatments aren't an afterthought. They're part of a complete approach to aesthetic care, one that considers skin quality, structure and maintenance all at once. Sometimes that means surgery. Sometimes it means Sculptra or a carefully timed series of peels. Often, it means a thoughtful combination, planned around your goals and lifestyle.

Procedure Details
Biostimulators are a simple injection process that begins in Dr. May's office with a discussion about your facial structure and aesthetic goals. During the first part of your appointment, he will go over your history with injectables and aesthetic treatments and mark out the injection points he wants to use. Once it is time for the injections, he may apply a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort throughout the process.
The treatment will only take around 20 to 30 minutes. This appointment may last longer if you're having more than one area treated. Dr. May will inject the product into several points around the treatment area to make sure it's dispersed evenly.

Recovery & Results
It is common for the area to look fuller right after the treatment because the PLLA particles are suspended in a saline that takes a day or two for the body to absorb. These are not your final results. You may also have a little tenderness where you were injected and some redness or swelling. The best results with Sculptra come from those who follow aftercare instructions, which will involve massaging the area several times each day: five minutes, five times a day, for five days (the "5-5-5 rule").
Your body will begin the process of building new collagen as the PLLA particles are absorbed. Improvements happen gradually, and usually Dr. May recommends at least three treatments to see the full benefits. With each treatment, you should notice the area starting to look more refreshed. You'll see your final results three to six months after your last treatment session. These results can last up to two years after injections.
