Steroid Injections

Charlotte's Most Trusted Plastic Surgeon

— delivering confidence through precision and care.

Softer Scars, Smoother Skin

Sometimes scars heal in a way that leaves them thicker and more noticeable. Steroid scar treatments are a great nonsurgical option for this type of stubborn scar.

At May Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brian May and his team use steroid injections as part of a comprehensive method for treating scars. He loves helping patients feel more comfortable and confident through treatments that come with very little downtime.

What Are Steroid Scar Treatments?

During steroid scar treatments, Dr. May injects a corticosteroid into a thickened or raised scar. The medication reduces inflammation in the scar tissue and slows the overproduction of collagen. After one or more sessions, the scar becomes flatter and less noticeable.

This method is used for hypertrophic or keloid scars that are not improving on their own. We may also use it proactively in patients who have a history of keloid scarring. These injections can also be a good first step before considering scar revision surgery.

My goal is simple. I combine surgical precision with genuine, personalized care so every patient not only looks their best but feels seen, heard, and confident in their transformation.

The Art & Science of Aesthetic Treatments With Dr. May

Dr. May trained as a surgeon, and surgery will always be at the core of what he does. But his engineering background taught him something that applies just as much in the treatment room as it does in the OR: the best solution isn't always the most complex one. It's the right one. When a patient's goals can be met with a well-chosen nonsurgical treatment, that's not a lesser path. It's good judgment, and it's exactly the kind of guidance patients at May Plastic Surgery have come to expect.

For Dr. May and his team, med spa treatments are part of a comprehensive approach to aesthetic care, one that considers skin quality, structure and maintenance all at once. Sometimes that means surgery. Sometimes it means Sculptra or a carefully timed series of peels. Often, it means a thoughtful combination, planned around your goals and lifestyle.

“I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach and tailor every aspect of the procedure.”

Steroid Scar Treatment Details

Steroid scar treatments are done right in the office and usually only take a few minutes. Dr. May uses a fine needle to insert small amounts of the corticosteroid all along the length of the scar. Sometimes there can be some pressure or stinging during the treatment, though most patients find it manageable. Dr. May can numb the area to make the process more comfortable.

Selecting the appropriate CMS is crucial for your project's success. Factors to consider include ease of use, scalability, and the availability of plugins or extensions. Popular options include WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal, each catering to different user needs.
Ensuring the security of your CMS is vital. Regular updates, strong passwords, and user access controls are essential practices. Additionally, consider implementing security plugins and conducting regular backups to protect your content.
To maximize the effectiveness of your CMS, content optimization is key. This includes using relevant keywords, structuring content with headings, and incorporating multimedia elements. Well-optimized content improves user engagement and search engine rankings.
The landscape of content management is evolving rapidly. Emerging technologies like AI and machine learning are shaping the future of CMS, enabling more personalized user experiences and automating content management tasks.
Many businesses leverage CMS platforms for e-commerce. These systems provide tools for product management, payment processing, and customer engagement. Popular e-commerce CMS options include Shopify and WooCommerce.
Social media integration is essential for modern content strategies. Many CMS platforms offer plugins that allow seamless sharing of content across social media channels, enhancing visibility and engagement.

What can I expect at my consultation?

The first consultation is a genuine, thoughtful conversation. We want the experience to feel comforting and non-clinical while still meeting all the medical needs of our patients. We’ll talk in-depth about your goals, concerns and medical history, and I’ll perform a physical exam to help determine the best treatment options. I like to think that my approach is honest and educational. I want patients to leave feeling informed, not pressured. You’ll receive a customized plan and have plenty of time to ask questions. This is your space to explore what’s right for you. We’ll also make sure to discuss skincare and how to properly prepare for treatment, as well as how to take care of your skin afterward to ensure the best results possible.

When is the right time to start steroid injections on a scar?

Timing depends on how the scar is behaving. In some cases, I'll begin steroid injections early if a scar is showing signs of becoming hypertrophic or keloid, such as thickening or feeling firm weeks after the wound has closed. Other times, I prefer to give the scar a chance to mature on its own first, since many scars will soften and flatten naturally within the first several months. If you're concerned about how a scar is healing, the best thing to do is come in so I can take a look.

How can I be sure my results will look natural and not overdone?

Through meticulous planning, customization and execution. I use the latest devices and techniques and maintain a relentless commitment to continuous learning. I also set realistic expectations and follow patients closely during their recovery to ensure optimal results. It is my opinion that some plastic surgeons will simply do the procedure a patient asks for because their friend had it or because they read about it. I offer options and have in-depth conversations about the pros and cons of those options. If a patient’s goals do not align with what I feel is a safe or appropriate treatment, I am more than comfortable telling them no.
