Softer Scars, Smoother Skin
Sometimes scars heal in a way that leaves them thicker and more noticeable. Steroid scar treatments are a great nonsurgical option for this type of stubborn scar.
At May Plastic Surgery, Dr. Brian May and his team use steroid injections as part of a comprehensive method for treating scars. He loves helping patients feel more comfortable and confident through treatments that come with very little downtime.

What Are Steroid Scar Treatments?
During steroid scar treatments, Dr. May injects a corticosteroid into a thickened or raised scar. The medication reduces inflammation in the scar tissue and slows the overproduction of collagen. After one or more sessions, the scar becomes flatter and less noticeable.
This method is used for hypertrophic or keloid scars that are not improving on their own. We may also use it proactively in patients who have a history of keloid scarring. These injections can also be a good first step before considering scar revision surgery.

What Can Steroid Scar Treatments Address?
Steroid scar treatments are best for scars that are raised or inflamed and haven't responded well to other methods like silicone therapy. Common types of scars that can benefit from steroid injections include:
- Keloid scars
- Hypertrophic scars
- Surgical scars that have thickened during healing
- Scars that are tender, itchy or uncomfortable
- Red or inflamed scars
During your consultation, our team will evaluate your scar and let you know whether steroid injections are the right fit or if a different approach would be better.
The Art & Science of Aesthetic Treatments With Dr. May
Dr. May trained as a surgeon, and surgery will always be at the core of what he does. But his engineering background taught him something that applies just as much in the treatment room as it does in the OR: the best solution isn't always the most complex one. It's the right one. When a patient's goals can be met with a well-chosen nonsurgical treatment, that's not a lesser path. It's good judgment, and it's exactly the kind of guidance patients at May Plastic Surgery have come to expect.
For Dr. May and his team, med spa treatments are part of a comprehensive approach to aesthetic care, one that considers skin quality, structure and maintenance all at once. Sometimes that means surgery. Sometimes it means Sculptra or a carefully timed series of peels. Often, it means a thoughtful combination, planned around your goals and lifestyle.

Steroid Scar Treatment Details
Steroid scar treatments are done right in the office and usually only take a few minutes. Dr. May uses a fine needle to insert small amounts of the corticosteroid all along the length of the scar. Sometimes there can be some pressure or stinging during the treatment, though most patients find it manageable. Dr. May can numb the area to make the process more comfortable.

Recovery & Results
There is very little downtime after a steroid scar treatment, besides a little swelling or soreness at the site that resolves quickly. There may be some aftercare instructions, like keeping activities lighter for the first day and avoiding direct pressure, but feel free to go back to your routine.
You may not see your full results after one treatment. It is likely that you will go in for multiple treatments spaced a few weeks apart, and the treatment may be paired with silicone sheets or laser treatments to help the area heal even more. Sometimes, if nonsurgical options are not working to resolve the scar, Dr. May can perform scar revision surgery.
