Internal Support to Lift and Reinforce
For some breast surgery patients, the key to long-lasting, beautiful results lies beneath the surface. An internal bra — a soft, biocompatible mesh placed during surgery — provides added structural support to the breast tissue, helping maintain lift, shape, and implant position over time.
At May Plastic Surgery, Dr. May uses advanced internal support techniques when appropriate to give patients the most stable, natural-looking outcomes possible. Whether you're undergoing a breast lift, augmentation, or revision, an internal bra can be an important part of your personalized surgical plan.

What Is an Internal Bra?
What Is an Internal Bra?
An internal bra is a surgical mesh — most commonly made from a bioabsorbable material like GalaFLEX™ — that is placed inside the breast during surgery to act as an internal support system. Think of it as a scaffold that holds the breast tissue and/or implant in the ideal position while the body heals and builds its own supportive tissue around it.
Over time (typically 18–24 months), the mesh is gradually absorbed by the body, leaving behind a layer of strong, natural collagen that continues to provide support long after the material is gone. This makes it an excellent option for patients who need extra reinforcement due to tissue laxity, implant size, or revision surgery.

Common Concerns an Internal Bra Can Address
- Support for larger implants (400–500cc+) that may be prone to displacement
- Thinner or less elastic breast tissue that may not hold shape on its own
- Revision surgery where previous results have shifted or stretched
- Implants that have bottomed out or shifted position over time
- Weakened tissue support following pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
The Art & Science of Breast Surgery With Dr. May
Dr. May approaches breast surgery with a deep understanding of both form and function. His use of internal bra techniques is guided by the same philosophy that drives all of his work: precision, attention to detail, and a commitment to results that look and feel natural.
Not every patient needs an internal bra — but for those who do, it can make a meaningful difference in the longevity and stability of their results. Dr. May carefully evaluates each patient's anatomy, tissue quality, and goals to determine whether internal support is the right addition to their surgical plan.

How the Mesh Is Placed
The internal bra mesh is placed during a breast surgery procedure — such as a lift, augmentation, or revision — and is positioned beneath the breast tissue or around the implant to provide targeted support. The mesh acts as an internal hammock, reinforcing the lower pole of the breast and helping to maintain the desired shape and position.
Customized Support for Every Patient
Dr. May tailors the placement and amount of mesh used based on the individual's anatomy and surgical goals. In some cases, the mesh is used to define and reinforce the breast pocket; in others, it provides a supportive sling to prevent implant descent. The versatility of the internal bra makes it a valuable tool in a wide range of breast procedures.
Combined With Other Procedures
An internal bra is not a standalone procedure — it's an enhancement added during another breast surgery. It can be incorporated into a breast lift, augmentation with lift, breast reduction, or revision surgery. Dr. May will discuss whether it's appropriate for your procedure during your consultation.

Recovery & Results
Recovery Timeline
Because the internal bra is placed during another breast procedure, recovery follows the same general timeline as that procedure. Most patients can expect some swelling, mild discomfort, and temporary activity restrictions. A supportive surgical bra is typically worn for several weeks to aid healing.
How the Mesh Works Over Time
The bioabsorbable mesh gradually integrates with the body's own tissues over the course of 18–24 months. During this time, it stimulates the production of new collagen, creating a natural internal support structure. Once fully absorbed, the mesh leaves behind a strong, lasting framework that continues to support the breast.
Long-Term Stability
One of the greatest benefits of the internal bra is improved long-term stability. By reinforcing the breast tissue from within, it helps prevent common issues like implant bottoming out, loss of upper pole fullness, and tissue stretching — giving patients results that hold up beautifully over time.
