What Is Labiaplasty?
Labia come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, all of which are normal. However, some women feel self-conscious or physically uncomfortable if their inner labia extend beyond the outer labia or if there is a lot of extra tissue in the area. Sometimes, more tissue can cause irritation during exercise or intimacy, and it can be visible in tight clothing.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces excess skin and reshapes the labia minora. Some women seek this surgery after childbirth or weight changes, which can stretch or alter the labial tissues. Others naturally have more tissue here and decide to pursue the surgery for a more balanced look.

What Can Labiaplasty Address?
Labiaplasty is performed for functional and cosmetic reasons. This surgery can address different issues, including:
- Tugging or pinching during exercise or intimacy
- Discomfort caused by chafing
- Bulging through tight clothing
- Asymmetry
- Changes after childbirth or hormone shifts
If you are constantly adjusting your clothing or avoiding certain activities because of discomfort, this option may be worth exploring.
The Art & Science of Body Contouring With Dr. May
There’s an art to sculpting the body that goes far beyond measurements or technique. It’s about understanding how curves interact, how light moves across the waistline, and how to restore definition without creating results that feel artificial or overdone. Dr. May brings a thoughtful, detail-oriented mindset to every contouring procedure, not just aiming to flatten the abdomen or remove fat, but to create a natural-looking shape and proportion that feels uniquely yours.
Body contouring requires precision, but it also requires restraint. Knowing when less is more, and how to shape rather than simply remove. “Body contouring isn’t just about skin and fat removal,” Dr. May explains. “It’s more important to know what to leave behind. That means looking beyond any one feature and designing something that makes sense for the whole body… something that feels natural and balanced.”
Every decision Dr. May makes, from where to remove fat to how each area flows into the next, is made with harmony and longevity in mind. His goal is always a result that enhances your shape while staying true to your natural form.

Procedure Details
Labiaplasty can be performed in our office under local anesthesia in many cases. Using local instead of general anesthesia makes your recovery time faster and easier. There are two different techniques that surgeons use for labiaplasty. The first is called a trim technique, which involves removing excess tissue along the edge of the labia minora to create the desired contour. The second method is known as a wedge technique, during which surgeons remove a V-shaped section of tissue from the thickest part of the labia, preserving the natural edge. Dr. May can use both methods.

Recovery & Results
The most common discomforts after labiaplasty are swelling and soreness as your incisions heal. Sometimes, you may notice mild spotting, usually because of healing incisions and irritation from urinating. This spotting should decrease over the next week. If not, make sure to call Dr. May. The initial healing period lasts for about one to two weeks, but you should wait four to six weeks to resume intercourse.
You will notice less tissue right after your surgery, but the area will appear sore and swollen for several weeks. Once the area heals, your results will be long-lasting. Aging and additional pregnancies can alter the tissues in the area again, so we may recommend waiting until your family is complete to have this surgery.
